Where swirl marks come from
Brush car washes, dirty sponges, drying with a bath towel, wiping snow off with a sleeve. Each leaves microscopic scratches. In direct sun they line up into circles around the light: swirls.
One-step polish vs multi-stage correction
- One-step polish (part of our Full Exterior) improves gloss and reduces light swirling in a single pass.
- Multi-stage correction (our Platinum Detail, from $1,000) uses a cutting stage to remove deeper defects, then one or more refining stages to restore clarity. It takes a full day.
How much clear coat does it remove?
Very little, but clear coat does not grow back. That is why correction is done with judgment: remove what is needed to make the defect disappear or fade, and stop. Aggressive shops can make a car look great once and leave nothing for next time.
What it cannot fix
A scratch that catches your fingernail has usually gone through the clear coat. Polishing can soften how it looks; only paint can truly fix it. Rock chips also need touch-up, not polish.
How to tell if your car needs it
Park in direct sun and look at a dark panel at an angle. If you see a web of fine circles around the sun’s reflection, you have swirls. If you are not sure, book our free 30-minute consultation and we will look at it with you.
